Position Summary:

Abington Arts Center is seeking a creative, enthusiastic, and community-minded Ceramics
Instructor to teach engaging ceramics classes for children, teens, and adults of all skill levels.
The instructor will foster creativity, build artistic confidence, and create an inclusive learning
environment that welcomes participants from diverse backgrounds.

Essential Responsibilities: 

The Ceramics Technician will oversee all operational aspects of the ceramics studio including:

  • Plan and teach ceramics classes and workshops for participants of varying ages and experience levels.
  • Instruct students in hand-building, wheel throwing, glazing, surface decoration, and basic kiln-firing techniques.
  • Adapt lessons to meet the needs of beginners, experienced artists, youth, adults, seniors, and individuals with diverse abilities.
  • Encourage creativity, artistic exploration, and personal expression while building technical ceramic skills.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming ceramics studio by ensuring proper use of equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Work with Ceramics Tech to monitor inventory of clay, glazes, and studio supplies
  • Promote the mission of Abington Arts Center by fostering an inclusive, respectful, and supportive environment.

 

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in ceramics, pottery, or ceramic arts.
  • Previous teaching or instructional experience in a community, educational, or studio setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of hand-building, wheel throwing, glazing techniques, kiln operation, and studio safety.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with participants of all ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational and classroom management skills.
  • Passion for community arts education and lifelong learning.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree or coursework in Fine Arts, Ceramics, Art Education, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching community-based arts programs.

Pay Rate: $20-$35/hour; pay commensurate with teaching and professional experience
Benefits: PTO, use of the studio for personal work and a flexible schedule.
 

Located on a historic 27-acre campus in Jenkintown, PA, just outside of Center City Philadelphia, Abington Art Center presents art exhibitions, creative programs, community forums and cultural events for the eastern Montgomery County and Philadelphia area. The Studio School provides classes in painting, drawing, printmaking, papermaking, ceramics and metals for both adults and youth.

Education Level: 
BFA in Ceramics preferred; Minimum 2-4 year degree in Art Education or Art.
