Position Summary:

Abington Art Center is seeking a Jewelry and Metalsmithing Instructor to work several days a week for our busy jewelry & metals program. The ideal candidate will have experience working as a Jewelry and Metalsmithing Instructor in a community studio or school. Preference will be given to candidates with strong technical skills, familiarity with sawing, soldering, stone setting, forming, forging, casting, finishing, and surface decoration while emphasizing craftsmanship, creativity, and safe studio practices. 

Instructors guide students through the design process, helping them develop technical proficiency, problem-solving abilities, and a personal artistic voice. They also maintain studio equipment, oversee tool and material use, and foster an inclusive, supportive learning environment that encourages experimentation and artistic growth.

Duties and Responsibilities: 
The Jewelry and Metalsmithing Instructor will oversee all operational aspects of the studio including:

  • Studio Maintenance
  • Cleaning and upkeep of all areas ( & equipment) of the studio
  • Reclaiming materials
  • Ordering materials
  • Receiving orders and stocking the studio
  • Following and enforcing all studio guidelines including safety protocols
  • Assigning cleaning tasks to studio monitors

 

Qualifications:

  • BFA in Jewelry & Metalsmithing or related art field (preferred)
  • Experience working in jewelry field
  • Ability to work independently and determine priorities when multiple tasks must be completed
  • Ability to remain on task 
  • Experience with fabrication, casting, etc.
  • Ability to repeatedly lift 25-50 lbs without assistance
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time, coupled with fine motor skills and close attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, instructors, and staff
  • Proficient with the Google Suite (gmail, doc, sheets, drive)
  • PA State Clearances to work with children required

 

Pay Rate: $25-$35/hour or commensurate with teaching & professional experience
Benefits: PTO, use of the studio for personal work and a flexible schedule.
 

Located on a historic 27-acre campus in Jenkintown, PA, just outside of Center City Philadelphia, Abington Art Center presents art exhibitions, creative programs, community forums and cultural events for the eastern Montgomery County and Philadelphia area. The Studio School provides classes in painting, drawing, printmaking, papermaking, ceramics and metals for both adults and youth.

Education Level: 
Minimum 2-4 year degree in Art Education or Art. Experience teaching adults with a range of Jewelry & Metalsmithing experience.
