ABOUT BSR:
BSR, a nonprofit publication founded in 2005, is now Philly’s premier interdisciplinary professional arts and culture journal. With a focus on cultural criticism and reviews, we cover all genres of the arts (including theater, visual art, museums, opera, music, dance, books, film and TV, public space, and the creative economy) in the greater Philadelphia area, including the Philly suburbs, South Jersey, and Delaware. We are an entirely freelance, part-time team, with a core staff of six (Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editor, Proofreader, Social-Media Manager, Executive Director, and Publisher) who work remotely with occasional coworking days and virtual or in-person meetups and events.
ASSOCIATE EDITOR JOB DESCRIPTION
The Associate Editor reports to the Editor-in-Chief and manages BSR’s preview coverage. Their core responsibilities are sourcing and writing a curated Weekly Roundup of Philly-area cultural events, assigning and editing 1-2 preview, interview, or profile stories (300-500 words) per week, and providing feedback on pieces written by the Editor-in-Chief. They will also have the opportunity to write reviews, features, and essays for BSR, attend cultural events around the region under the auspices of BSR, work closely with our extensive list of freelance writers, and help to lead BSR events. They will have the chance to shape the direction of our organization, and receive journalistic mentorship from the Editor-in-Chief.

A passion for arts access and human rights (including immigrant and LGBTQ+ rights and disability justice).
The ability to be a responsible and ethical representative of BSR on the arts scene.
An active social-media presence (regardless of the size of the following; quality and thoughtfulness are more important than stats) and good working knowledge of digital media.
The ability to work without generative AI for any aspect of writing or editing for BSR.
Familiarity with BSR’s work.
Deep familiarity with the Philly-area cultural scene and interest in diverse cultural corners of the city that aren’t breaking through in mainstream media.
A commitment to lifetime learning and the benefits of working in community.
Respect for a positive work-life balance and prioritization of health and wellbeing for themselves and others.
